Nubeo Ulysses Release: Out of This World Cool

Nubeo, as a brand, is no stranger to strange or cutting-edge, science fiction inspired designs (see the Missile Command Limited Edition Release recently), but they somehow continue to surprise me with each new release. Their latest collection, the Ulysses, is no exception, and it might just be my favorite watch from them yet.

The Nubeo Ulysses Limited Edition was created for the upcoming anniversary of the Ulysses Solar Mission's end in June 30, 2009. The Ulysses spacecraft was launched several decades ago to send valuable data back to scientists regarding our solar system's Sun and other planetary bodies. It is the first spacecraft that successfully scanned the latitude of our sun, and we have gained invaluable information about it as a result.

It is fitting, then, that the Nubeo Ulysses offers something entirely new to my collection - and I'm sure many others - with its skeletonized dial, making it a joy just to simply read the time.

Nubeo Ulysses Solar White: Even Better Than I Thought

When I first received the opportunity to announce this release - as well as review it, so stay tuned for that - I was both humbled and anxious. I had never had a watch with a skeletonized dial before, so I was worried that I might not like it. After all, a problem with skeletonized dials is that it makes reading the time quite difficult.

Fortunately, Nubeo solves this problem by having large, sharkteeth style hour markers, and equally large handset that - while also skeletonized - remains thick to allow for better legibility and Lume application. There is also still a minute track, further improving the watch's legibility. The name of the brand - NUBEO - is tastefully emblazoned onto a metal plate at the 9 o'clock, ensuring that it doesn't obscure anything of the movement.

The movement itself is an unnamed time-only movement made specifically for this collection, and I really enjoy watching the balance wheel at the 6 o'clock as it pulses and rotates with energy.

I Want More

As the header suggests, I just want more of this watch. It is a watch that blew me away despite my worries, and I find myself wearing it almost every day. The strap is comfortable, but I'm pretty sure it is silicone. For me, that's fine, but it's worth noting, and it is not as impressive as the rest of the watch.

At 48mm, the watch is definitely not small. Since it has an integrated strap, it doesn't wear exactly like a standard 48mm watch, but there's no changing the fact that it's quite large. On my 6.4 inch wrist, it really sticks out, but I think that's the point with this watch. Perhaps the part that most people - including myself - might struggle with is that the movement doesn't have hacking. I can understand why, but it's just something nice that I've come to expect with most modern watches.

The Ulysses is available in 6 variants - Ethereal Black, Starlit Azure, Nove Ignite, Solar White (that's mine), Celestial Sunbean, and Pulsar Shadow - and they are each limited to 100, numbered pieces.

I can't wait to share my full review soon. For more information about this release, check out NUBEO. Thank you to the NUBEO team for this opportunity.
